About Brown County

Brown County lies about 30 to 40 minutes east of Cincinnati, with its southern border framed by the Ohio River. Established in 1817 from parts of Adams and Clermont counties, it was named after General Jacob Brown, a hero of the War of 1812. Today, Brown County is part of the greater Cincinnati metropolitan area, balancing rural charm with easy access to the city. The county is home to just over 43,000 residents and is known for its rolling hills, fertile farmland, and small-town hospitality.

Communities

The county seat is Georgetown, a historic town that also serves as one of the area’s primary destinations. Other villages and communities include Ripley, Mount Orab, Aberdeen, Russellville, Sardinia, and Hamersville. The landscape features gentle hills and creeks such as White Oak Creek, which winds through the countryside before flowing into the Ohio River. With its combination of scenic farmland, historic towns, and rural tranquility, Brown County offers a distinctly peaceful pace of life.

Things to Do

Brown County offers a mix of outdoor recreation, history, and local flavor. Visitors can explore the U.S. Grant Boyhood Home and John Rankin House in Georgetown, both of which provide a glimpse into the area’s presidential and abolitionist history. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy hiking, bird-watching, and wildlife viewing at the Indian Creek Wildlife Area, while local farms and orchards offer seasonal picking and family activities. The North Pole Road Covered Bridge, dating back to 1865, remains one of the county’s most beloved historic landmarks.  And for a relaxed afternoon, visitors can take a scenic drive along the Ohio River.
